PORTLAND, Ore. — High school students play an important role in maintaining the blood supply in the Pacific Northwest region. Each year, more than 24,000 units of life-saving blood are collected at local high schools, helping to save thousands of lives. High schools also provide the greatest source of first time donors and are critical in developing future generations of blood donors.
The American Red Cross, Cricket Wireless, Z100 and Oaks Park are challenging high schools in Portland and Salem, Oregon, and Southwest Washington to host blood drives between January 1 and June 30, 2008. Schools will compete against other schools of similar size within their division and all presenting donors and volunteers at any Cricket High School Challenge Blood Drive will receive an Oaks Park Skate Free pass.
The schools with the highest percentage of presenting donors within each division win the ultimate prize …for all presenting donors and volunteers. The party includes a VIP pass for a day (or evening) of fun with access to all the excitement Oaks Park has to offer plus all of the winning school’s presenting blood donors and volunteers will get VIP status to a Z100 concert at Sellwood Waterfront Park.
The High School Blood Drive Challenge is designed to emphasize the importance of blood donation and the role that high school students can play in support of their community. The program strives to achieve several goals:
- Recognize and thank all those who donate and volunteer.
- Promote blood donation among our youth
- Provide leadership and education opportunities
- Promote community spirit and friendly competition between high schools
